Desk Chair Alles

Wow, I have been a bad blogger. I have not posted in forever. Ahhh!

Sorry about that.

I should update you on the upcoming :::September 2018 Classes:::

Hit that link. Doy.

In other news, I destroyed the desk chair again. This is the result of working too many hours in a chair just basically destroying it by sitting in it. The chair had reached this tragic point where once again it was coming apart — coming apart hard enough it ripped the back seam out of my favorite sweat pants. Something had to be done. First, so that I did not accidentally wear favorite sweat pants with the back seam out onto the balcony and flash my underoos at my neighbors, I had to fix the sweat pants.

So, I hauled the sewing machine out and fixed the sweat pants.

Dear Neighbors: You’re welcome.

Second because the sewing machine was out (ahh!) and I’m getting ready to hit the road again and put everything in storage and I can’t think of a more depressing scenario than pulling a beloved desk chair that still needs to be reupholstered out in a brand new place (okay I can actually imagine more depressing things but stick with me I’m going for still needs to be repaired not feng shui STILL NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED in a new place desk chair drama here quit it). That is pretty daunting going into a new place. You have not just hauled your whole life into a new place. You have also hauled uncompleted (big if we’re talking fix the desk chair) tasks into the new place. As in, great, new start, here are all the things you didn’t finish that are old stuff and not a new start.

I didn’t want to do that. I figured I better fix the chair.

I have to reupholster the chair because the manufacturers discontinued the chair model and won’t sell me parts (like a new seat of such) for it. And because I love the chair too much to give it up. Hence, damaged chair? It’s up to me. Ahhh!

[Reupholstering the desk chair is pretty daunting, but I love this chair like a shark loves blood, I refuse to give it up.]

So I bit the bullet and did it. I now have three weeks to sit in and love my beautiful desk chair again in pristine desk chair condition before it goes into storage when I hit the road again, and also, when it comes out of storage, (assuming movers do not destroy it), it will be my perfect pristine beautiful desk chair again wherever I land.

Yay!

*By the way, the chair project is always :::pretty daunting:::

the great chair project

July 26, 2015

After a year of watching my poor chair slide into decrepitude — I am abusive to work chairs and it was true decrepitude, I could not sit in that office chair anymore without physical pain and also had to place witty throws on the chair when guests came over to camouflage the tragedy — and contacting the company that made the chair Zuo Modern Furniture asking for a way to purchase a new chair seat over and over and over again, I gave up. Not on the chair. On the company.

There were two choices left. Buy the chair new all over again. Which I am so opposed to. Or fix the chair.

Ahhh!

Here’s my pretty chair starting out.

chair_before_the_frenzy

I do not know how other people take on these projects, but I like to leave myself markers and directions. [BETTER directions than Ikea has ever sent me in this lifetime, BTW, God Dammit, Ikea, you need better directions!] Like, um, postits. Yay!

chair_arms

Right, left, these will be important details later.

chair_base

Also once you have taken the poor chair apart, if you want to put it back together again, I have this thing about a post it to remind myself which end is the back. [If you have never tried to put something together and done it backwards, well you have never been working off Ikea directions or you just did not have Max Adams sassy pink post it helpers. Bummer for you.]

chair_back

Tragically now that is all that is really left of my pretty chair. Ahhh!

chair_removing_from_base

After the arms are gone, taking that baby apart, oh nos!

chair_removingfrombase2

It’s just you and me, Baby. Say good-bye to those legs.

chair_base_before_canvas_removal

Ahh, no legs! But look at the pretty canvas base!

chair_leather_begin

Oops, pretty canvas base gone!

chair_leather_peel1

What other horrible indignities will I inflict on this chair?

chair_padding

Okay pretty big ones. Look at me exposing that foam.

chair_wood_broad

Ah! And now wood!

Really it all came down though to needing to know how they layered that damn foam.

Got it.

Also I have to sew a new leather cover.

New chair base to come.

Yay!

*Also screw you Zuo Modern Furniture peeps that made me put together fifty documents and photos every time I called in wanting a new chair base and went radio silent every time. SIX. TIMES. I hate that I love your chair so much I am going to save it anyway.

not the chair!

My beautiful little office chair is trying to go poof like a :::lucky T-shirt:::

Well the edge of the seat is.

It’s not actually covered in leather, it is covered in “leatherette.”

I guess “leatherette” has a 3 year expiration date.

I’m tracking down the manufacturer to see if I can buy the little chair a new seat.

I’m looking really hard at vinyl repair kits.

Dear Universe, if you know a good way to repair “leatherette,” help!

*i am mad dependent on unchanging physical pillars in my work environment, change or move furniture and it shoots a shock wave through so hard it can shut me down for weeks — this really confuses the :::social writers:::

No love for the chair? Seriously? Oh you bastards. Do I not sweat? Do I not bleed?

Do you not know what went into the new chair seat?

Let’s look at it another way. Before. And After.

That’s right dammit.

Also I put the new chair casters on today.
The old casters were trashed. The new casters roll. Yay!
